December 17, 2002 - CyOptics, a developer of Indium Phosphide (InP) based optical components, is providing key modulation technology to Bandwidth9, a manufacturer of VCSEL-based tunable laser transmission products, for development of a tunable, extended-reach transmitter. CyOptics's amplified electro-absorption modulator, the EAM2010, is the modulation element within Bandwidth9's MetroFlex G2 transmitter product, which is a tunable alternative to fixed-wavelength transmitters.

"This is a good example of joint product development, where innovations complement each other and result in an attractive solution for system vendors," said Vladimir Kozlov, RHK senior analyst, optical components. "Wide tunability of a VCSEL, combined with the extended-reach of an amplified EAM, enable a universal transmitter module that can support any ITU channel and any reach. That is exactly what system vendors are looking for."

The EAM2010 amplified modulator is a monolithic, InP-based device providing extended-reach transmission at up to 10 Gbits/sec. Unlike standard modulators that attenuate incoming light, the EAM2010 includes built-in amplification, enabling its use with low power light sources. In addition, the EAM2010 has integrated power monitoring and allows dynamic control of transmitter output power. The EAM2010 is part of the MetroFlex G2's fully integrated laser system, which provides uncompensated reach beyond 600 km at 2.5 Gbits/sec.

Headquartered in Waltham, MA, CyOptics is ISO9001 certified. For more information, please visit the company's Web site at www.cyoptics.com.
