Agere Systems and Yafo Networks today announced a partnership to jointly develop integrated adaptive receiver technology for high-speed optical transmissions. Announced at Supercomm 2002, this device will offer superior receiver performance and low distortion at 40-Gbits/sec, say company representatives, giving systems manufacturers the ability to develop next-generation optical networks by eliminating one of the most limiting impairments in high data-rate systems.
Per the agreement, Yafo and Agere will develop 40-Gbit/sec receivers that incorporate polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation and other features inside a compact, integrated module. This agreement spans product definition and development of integrated receiver modules, combining Yafo's PMD compensation technology with Agere's expertise in 40-Gbit/s receiver design and other optical component technologies.
"This strategic partnership brings together two leaders in high-speed optical networks to develop the critical technologies needed to make 40-Gigabit networks a reality," contends Mark Granahan, vice president of Agere's optical access and transport division.

A receiver that integrates PMD compensation can reduce these pulse distortions at 40- Gbits/sec by converting any incoming polarization state back to the intended polarization during optical transmission. This adaptive receiver module would be intended for use in long-haul and ultra-long-haul applications. General availability of the adaptive receiver is expected in early 2003.
