Commsworld partners with Ciena to launch business-grade broadband service
On September 10, Scottish ISP Commsworld announced that it is deploying Ciena’s XGS-PON pluggable optical line terminals (micro-OLTs) and 3801 optical network units (ONUs) for its new business-grade high-speed broadband service.
Commsworld reports that the Ethernet over Fiber to the Premise (EoFTTP) service guarantees a minimum symmetrical connectivity speed of 100 Mbps and is burstable to 1 Gbps.
Commsworld chief technology officer Charlie Boisseau called Ciena’s pluggable OLTs a game-changer for deploying XGS-PON across the company’s network.
“As a B2B provider, we focus on quality, not quantity, so naturally, our customer density in any given area is obviously lower than an equivalent residential provider,” said Boisseau in a press release. “This can bring challenges when creating a business case for additional investment to enable new services at each of our PoPs. Being able to deploy a single XGS-PON port at a time without the need for larger platforms has meant even a rural or fledgling PoP can be enabled for our new EoFTTP service on day one.”
The XGS-PON solution project is being carried out in cooperation with Ciena’s partner Nomios.
