Nokia enters deal to support AT&T’s fiber broadband growth

Sept. 5, 2024
The agreement includes fiber network upgrades and the deployment of Nokia’s fiber solution platforms.

On September 3, Nokia announced that it has entered a five-year agreement with AT&T to support AT&T’s network expansions and upgrades.

Nokia reports that it will deploy its Lightspan MF platform and Altiplano Access Controller to support AT&T’s fiber networks, and the deal will include fiber network upgrades to AT&T’s current footprint and next-generation fiber technologies.

Sandy Motley, president of Fixed Networks at Nokia, said the company’s fiber solutions can help operators like AT&T make the most of their existing fiber broadband networks.

“This collaboration is a major milestone in our mission to connect more people and businesses,” said Motley in a press release. “Our fiber solution opens the door to a full range of PON technologies available on the same platform and fiber. This includes 10/25G PON today and eventually 50/100G PON in the future.”

Lightspan MF is the same platform that Frontier used to demonstrate 100G broadband network speeds earlier this year.

In the same press release, Chris Sambar, AT&T’s head of networking, said that fiber is crucial in providing the foundation for the company’s services.

“This expansion,” said Sambar, “will not only enhance broadband access for millions of customers but also sets the stage for the next wave of digital innovation, including Industry 4.0, smart cities, IoT applications, and ultra-high-definition streaming.”
