According to Parks Associates, consumer familiarity with video doorbells has increased by 57% over the past year. The research house says video doorbells now have the fourth highest adoption rate among smart home products in the U.S. market, with high growth potential in 2019.

"One-quarter of broadband households report intention to purchase a smart video doorbell in the next 12 months," said Patrice Samuels, senior analyst at Parks. "Leading brands, including Ring, SimpliSafe, and Netatmo, all released new products in this category at the end of 2018. Several firms also announced new video doorbells at CES 2019, leading to a very competitive market. Parks Associates forecasts close to 4 million unit sales in 2019, up to more than 5 million by 2023."

As more products become available, manufacturers can be expected to look to differentiate their offerings through unique features or by targeting new consumer segments. For example, Ring designed its Door Cam model to target MDU residents to expand its market in the United States and Europe.

"Many smart doorbells are bought standalone, but almost all of these products are part of a smart product ecosystem, where the manufacturer also offers smart cameras, thermostats, or other sensors," Samuels said. "The current popularity of smart doorbells helps raise the adoption prospects for a host of smart home devices."
