Edgewater Wireless Systems (YFI; TSX.V), in joint development with CableLabs, announced the availability of code to support Dual Channel Wi-Fi in public open source. The code has been released into the OpenWrt repository and is available at https://www.cablelabs.com/technologies/dual-channel-wi-fi.

Intended to alleviate jittery video and laggy gaming experiences, Dual Channel Wi-Fi is designed to enable one or more downlink-only data channels in addition to a standard bi-directional channel. Designed to be compatible with all WiFi releases, including Edgewater's MCSR, Dual Channel Wi-Fi employs unused spectrum to reduce contention and latency while increasing airtime utilization. Developed for various access points (APs) and client platforms, including set-top boxes, TVs and soon, gaming platforms and iPads, Dual Channel Wi-Fi is intended to be implemented wherever traditional single-channel WiFi struggles with contention, in both residential and enterprise applications.

"Dual Channel Wi-Fi brilliantly addresses latency and utilizes WiFi spectrum as never before. Implementing Dual Channel Wi-Fi using Spectrum Slicing on our patented Multi-Channel Single Radio (MCSR), Edgewater Wireless can unlock under-used spectrum with concurrent in-band multi-channel," said Eric Smith, VP of product at Edgewater Wireless. "When you can slice up the spectrum, as Edgewater Wireless does, your flexibility in deploying techniques like Dual Channel Wi-Fi are vast and very powerful in all WiFi verticals, including the residential market."

"Dual Channel is the start of a new revolution in the industry and puts us at the forefront of this game-changing innovation," said Andrew Skafel, president and CEO of Edgewater Wireless. "As a great followup to our participation in the CableLabs/UpRamp Fiterator, we're excited to be part of this major development by the globally respected industry innovation engine, CableLabs. Applications like Dual Channel Wi-Fi open up opportunities for OEM/ODM and licensing with major global players for Edgewater and represent a major step forward."
