DOCOMO PACIFIC selects Harmonic to deploy new 10G FTTP service

Jan. 10, 2024
The NTT DOCOMO subsidiary will utilize Harmonic's virtualized broadband platform to bring fiber internet connectivity to rural and urban areas.

Harmonic has been chosen to deliver 10G broadband services to Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, bringing reliable fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) internet to more than 10,000 residents.

DOCOMO PACIFIC will reach underserved and rural communities as well as densely populated residential and business districts using Harmonic's cOS™ virtualized core software. Harmonic aims to simplify the deployment of OLT shelves in outdoor cabinets and remote OLT devices in outdoor nodes, reducing costs faced by the service provider. Harmonic also reports that its FTTP solution will minimize new construction and, in turn, permitting and building constraints.

Mike Smith, executive vice president of network operations at DOCOMO PACIFIC, said in a press release, "Rolling out FTTP allows us to address electrical power volatility and grounding challenges, reduce operating costs, and ensure a reliable, always-on ultra high-speed broadband service for subscribers. Harmonic's virtualized broadband platform put us on a fast track to 10G fiber. In less than five weeks, Harmonic successfully designed, architected, delivered, and deployed a fiber-to-the-home solution, which is unprecedented in the broadband world."

Harmonic’s senior vice president of broadband business operations, Dan Gledhill, said in the press release, "Broadband connectivity is central to our modern-day livelihood for work, school, health and well-being. Embracing Harmonic's market-leading broadband portfolio for FTTP delivery provides DOCOMO PACIFIC with wider availability of high-speed fiber internet, greater resiliency and facilitates lower costs for their subscribers."

Currently, more than 23 million homes and over 100 service providers worldwide use Harmonic’s cOS virtualized core-powered broadband services.
