At CES in Las Vegas, Charter Communications (NASDAQ:CHTR) announced a new video solution using technology from Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) and ActiveVideo. The system includes new set-tops, downloadable security, and a cloud-based user interface designed to work on any deployed set-top box in Charter's footprint.

Cisco will supply its cloud-based security suite, including downloadable security (DCAS) for set-top boxes, and DRM solution to support video on IP devices. Cisco will supply a substantial share of Charter's new 'Worldbox' set-tops and will continue to supply CableCARD boxes until Charter migrates all current and acquired systems to the downloadable security solution. The Worldbox is designed to act as a thin client that can be updated via cloud software and incorporates a cloud-driven user interface (UI).

The cloud-based Spectrum Guide user interface is based on technology from ActiveVideo, and is designed to change the guide from an IP format to streamed MPEG and render it as though it were an IP guide. Charter expects to launch Spectrum Guide on Worldboxes, as well as on legacy boxes currently deployed within the Charter footprint. The Spectrum Guide features search and discovery capabilities with graphics and TV and movie poster art.

Charter plans to offer both an HD only and an HD-DVR Worldbox featuring dual IP/QAM capabilities, configurable up to 16 tuners, a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem, 1 Gig of RAM, USB, and a terabyte of storage on the HD-DVR.
