Vancouver, Canada-based service provider Urban Communications (TSX VENTURE:UBN) has launched fiber-based symmetrical gigabit Internet service to residential consumers in metro Vancouver. The 1 Gbps service costs $69 a month ($49 for the first 1,000 people to sign up).
The company's fiber network covers 200 kilometers across metro Vancouver and part of Victoria, BC, and passes 850,000 residential units. So far, Urban has connected 24 residential buildings in metro Vancouver, representing 1,800 units, and has secured access agreements with 28 additional buildings that represent more than 3,000 units. Some 200 people have signed up so far, and the company hopes to grow its user-base to 2,000 subscribers by the end of 2015.
