Japanese cable operator EHIME CATV has deployed Harmonic's (NASDAQ:HLIT) Electra X3 media processor to support a trial of what the two companies believe is the country's first live, full-frame 4K UltraHD video channel. Using the Electra X3 to encode UltraHD content using the HEVC Main 10 codec, EHIME CATV can deliver real-time 2160p60 video to subscribers' set-top boxes.
The 2RU Electra X3 incorporates Harmonic's PURE Compression Engine, designed for broadcast and OTT multiscreen delivery at sub-20 Mbps bitrates. Harmonic will demonstrate its Electra X media processor line at BIRTV 2015 in August in Beijing and at IBC 2015 in September in Amsterdam.
