Anza Electric Cooperative in California has joined ADTRAN's (NASDAQ:ADTN) gigabit Internet program, "Enabling Communities, Connecting Lives," which currently is deployed in about 300 communities. Anza serves about 4,000 customers in the high desert between San Diego and Palm Springs. It calls its fiber-based gigabit service ConnectAnza.

"ConnectAnza is definitely filling a void in the market. With only one CLEC delivering basic broadband and no cable providers offering any alternatives, we took it upon ourselves to give our customers the latest ultra-fast, gigabit broadband connectivity," said Kevin Short, general manager, Anza Electric Cooperative. "The response by both residential and business customers has been amazing. It's not at all unusual for our service van drivers to get stopped in the street by people asking when they can be signed up for gigabit broadband. We really see this technology having a transformational effect on our community."
