Mediacom Communications is deploying DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet service in its south Alabama and Florida panhandle markets, covering 55 Gulf Coast communities.

"Creating true gigabit communities across our national footprint was a central component of the 3-year, $1 billion capital expenditure plan announced by Mediacom in 2016," said Doug Frank, group vice president for Mediacom's Coastal Region. "Our aggressive rollout of gigabit speeds has provided dozens of cities and towns across south Alabama and the Florida panhandle with a distinct technological advantage in today's global marketplace."

Mediacom prepped its network for DOCSIS 3.1 last year, completing deployments of CCAP gear from Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) and Casa Systems in December. The company first launched services a month later in Iowa with modems from Technicolor. The company has since added modems from Hitron and Ubee, and modems from other vendors will be added as they become available. The Hitron and Technicolor modems currently in use are gateways with built-in WiFi routers.

Mediacom currently offers DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit in 1,200 communities, and another 36 Florida and Alabama markets are slated to get the service over the next month, as part of the company's plan to make the service available across its 22-state footprint. Other recent deployments include Missouri and Kansas. In conjunction with each gigabit launch, Mediacom also introduces a 500 Mbps tier of service.
