Lumos plans additional $56M fiber broadband expansion in coastal N.C.

April 5, 2023
Through the service expansion, Lumos will now provide portions of Wilmington and Carolina Beach, as well as the communities of Ogden, Myrtle Grove, Castle Hayne, and Wrightsboro, with 655 miles of advanced fiber-optic network technology.

Lumos on Apr. 4 announced a $56 million investment to provide its fully fiber-optic internet and home Wi-Fi services to residents and businesses of North Carolina's New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington.

Through the expansion, Lumos will provide portions of Wilmington and Carolina Beach, as well as the communities of Ogden, Myrtle Grove, Castle Hayne, and Wrightsboro, with 655 miles of advanced fiber-optic connectivity technology.

The provider contends the network expansion will bring the community a network capable of delivering up to 385 times faster upload speeds, and up to 30 times faster download speeds than traditional cable.

The network expansion highlights the company’s rapid growth and development plans as the third new market for Lumos in 2023.

Lumos notes the new fiber internet service will enable smooth operations of the communities' current and future technology needs, along with delivering innovations in telemedicine, remote working and learning, video streaming, and entertainment which demand the speed and reliability of fiber-optic connectivity.

Lumos currently provides fiber internet, whole-home Wi-Fi, voice, and streaming services to more than 200,000 homes and businesses across North Carolina and Virginia.

Lumos CEO Brian Stading commented:

“Lumos remains steadfast in its mission to deliver uninterrupted, accessible, 100% fiber-optic internet that has the capacity for today’s internet needs and that anticipates tomorrow’s. We are committed to providing New Hanover residents with the best connection possible, improving their quality of life.”

Engineering work on the new fiber build will start in mid-2023. New Hanover residents will receive communication by mail when this begins, and can also sign up for email updates at http://www.lumosfiber.com/builtforthefuture.
