Molex Ventures says it will assist further collaboration between Molex Optical Solutions Group (OSG) and silicon photonics specialist Elenion Technologies, LLC. Molex Ventures cited “further investment” but did not reveal that investment’s size. Molex OSG and Elenion are working together to develop optical products for both telecom and datacom applications.

Molex Ventures, a subsidiary of Molex Electronic Technologies, LLC, oversees the company’s venture and early stage investment pipeline and processes.

“High-speed silicon photonic-based technologies will enable the next generation of smaller form factors, with higher bandwidth and improved power efficiency,” said Adit Narasimha, vice president and general manager of Molex Optoelectronics Segment. “This further investment will enable us to accelerate the introduction of next-generation coherent solutions, broadening the solutions we offer to our customers.”

Speaking at OFC 2019 in San Diego, Douglas Busch, vice president and general manager, optical solutions, at Molex said those next-generation coherent solutions will include the 400ZR. That design will be exclusive to Molex; Busch said that alpha samples of the coherent optical module should arrive by the end of this year.

“We are excited to expand our collaboration with Molex. With our SiPh technology platform, Elenion is able to rapidly innovate, meeting the future needs of our customers,” added Larry Schwerin, CEO, Elenion Technologies.

In the coherent realm, Elenion has developed optical engines for CFP2-ACO and CFP-DCO coherent optical modules (see, for example, “Coriant offers 200-Gbps short-reach CFP2-ACO for Groove G30 platform”). Molex and Elenion see the latter’s next generation CSTAR system-on-chip offerings will lead to smaller optical engines and pluggable modules for telecom and hyperscale data center applications.
