Infinera adopts Telecom Infra Project Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway

Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) says it will offer a Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway (DCSG) "solution" that complies with the Telecom Infra Project’s (TIP’s) DCSG specification. The company is showing off its DSCG offering in collaboration with Edgecore Networks, which announced last year that it would develop such platforms.

The DSCG offers an open platform for cell-site traffic backhaul requirements, both for existing 2G/3G/4G networks and emerging 5G mobile network deployments. Infinera will add its own spin on the platform through the provision of its Converged Network Operating System (CNOS), a disaggregated carrier-class routing software stack.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to open networking, we are excited to demonstrate the value of our disaggregated CNOS software within the framework of TIP’s DCSG specification,” said Mikko Hannula, vice president, engineering and product management at Infinera. “Our DCSG solution is enhanced by our comprehensive portfolio of software-defined networking-capable networking solutions and end-to-end system integration capabilities.”

“We are pleased to welcome Infinera to our DCSG open networking ecosystem, which is expanding the scope and value of disaggregation beyond optical transport networks,” added Luis MartinGarcia, co-lead, Disaggregated Cell Site Gateways project group, TIP. “Open networks can help operators as they build out 5G infrastructure by reducing costs, expanding and leveraging automation so they are more agile in introducing new services.”

The DSCG effort is backed by Orange, Vodafone, Telefonica, and TIM; the latter three have issued a joint request for information (RFI) for such a platform. According to a TIP blog post, the three service providers have conducted technical reviews of responses to the RFI; the three will announce finalist companies at some point during the show. Lab trials should follow, with field deployments later this year, according to TIP.
