Infinera adds new features to Groove G30 Network Disaggregation Platform

Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) has added new features to the Groove G30 Network Disaggregation Platform, one of the systems it gained via its purchase of Coriant. Coriant developed the 1RU Groove G30 as a modular data center interconnect optical transport system with open line system elements (see "Coriant Groove G30 1RU data center interconnect platform offers 3.2 Tbps"), and the new features conform to this vision.

The enhancements include:

  • Optical protection switching (OPSM): As its name implies, the pluggable optical protection switch module enhances network reliability in the face of interface and amplifier failures and fiber cuts.
  • Colorless, flexible-grid add/drop (CAD8/8E): This eight-channel pluggable module, service-expandable to 16 channels, provides colorless, flexible-grid add/drop capabilities in support of high-speed coherent traffic based on 64QAM, obviating the need for full up ROADMs.
  • Optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR): This pluggable module offers in-service and out-of-service OTDR test capabilities on up to four fibers with an effective reach of up to 100 km.
  • In-line amplifier (ILA): The Groove G30 OLS can now be deployed as an in-line amplifier, using the platform’s line of pluggable EDFAs.
  • Optical power monitoring (OCM): The pluggable optical channel monitor supports per-channel power monitoring on four ports (i.e., two degrees in two directions).
  • 64-port 75-GHz mux/demux (OMD64): This module uses 75-GHz grid filters to support the channel width required for high-baud-rate wavelengths using such advanced modulation schemes as 64QAM to support 600-Gbps transmission. The support of as many as 64 wavelengths per filter enables scalability to 38.4 Tbps per fiber pair. Coriant had unveiled the OMD64 itself shortly before the acquisition closed (see "Coriant adds 600G transmission to Groove via CloudWave T").

Infinera’s acquisition of Coriant has naturally led to speculation about how Infinera might address potential product overlap. The company already had a data center interconnect platform, the Cloud Xpress. “The expanded capabilities of the Groove G30 reinforce our commitment to this industry-leading platform and demonstrate the benefits customers realize with open optical transport,” said Julia Larikova, principal product manager for optical layer at Infinera. “As end-user applications continue to drive demand for infrastructure capacity, our open line solutions provide an optimal means to scale efficiently while reducing costs.”
