CityFibre to deploy Calix AXOS operating system across FTTP networks

Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says it will partner with UK open access fiber to the premises (FTTP) network operator CityFibre to deploy the vendor’s AXOS software-defined access operating system. Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says it will partner with UK open access fiber to the premises (FTTP) network operator CityFibre to deploy the vendor’s AXOS software-defined access operating system. The deployment will help CityFibre evolve its network to support 10-Gbps services via the Calix E9-2 Intelligent Edge System.

CityFibre is among the growing number of alternative FTTP network operators challenging incumbent BT and its access network business unit, Openreach (others include Hyperoptic and British Fibre Networks). The company recently was sold to a consortium that includes Goldman Sachs' West Street Infrastructure Partners and funds managed by Antin Infrastructure Partners consortium-controlled Connect Infrastructure Bidco, a move that will fund an aggressive roll-out plan (see “Goldman Sachs, Antin consortium finalizes acquisition of CityFibre” and “CityFibre plans to raise £200 million for FTTH projects, acquisition”). The company has partnered with Vodafone to help move the plan along (see “Vodafone chooses CityFibre FTTP network for UK broadband delivery”).

The deployment of the AXOS operating system aims to enable CityFibre to leverage programmability, network intelligence, and automation to improve its service mix to its customers, which include carriers, mobile operators, and ISPs. “In Calix we have found a like-minded ally, an innovator that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible when intelligent software meets fiber-only infrastructure. Our partnership enables us to unleash the full power and potential of our fiber networks, creating the nation’s fastest, smartest, and most accessible digital communications platform,” said Greg Mesch, chief executive of CityFibre.

“The ability to scale services up to 100 Gbps, while driving customer experience to new levels, highlights the inadequacies of connections that are passed off as fiber today. It also shows that not all full fiber networks are equal and that, as an alternative network builder, CityFibre’s commitment to the UK’s digital future goes far beyond simply putting fiber in the ground,” Mesch added.
