Speaking during his company’s annual general meeting July 5, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani pledge that Reliance Jio will launch a fiber to the premises (FTTP) initiative that will see fiber broadband deployed in 1,100 cities across India. Jio will market the resultant FTTP-enabled service as Jio GigaFiber.

Ambani said the company has already spent Rs 250,000 crore on “digital infrastructure” but did not say how much the newly announced initiative will cost. He did reveal that beta trials of Jio GigaFiber are underway in “tens of thousands of homes.” Taking a page from Google, Jio will accept signups for FTTP service starting August 15 (India’s Independence Day), then prioritize deployments based on demonstrated demand.

Ambani did not say when deployments will begin.
