Telia Carrier establishes PoP in city of Queretaro to connect Mexican providers to AS1299 backbone

Telia Carrier said that it is establishing its first Mexican point of presence (PoP) in Queretaro, a city north of Mexico City that is a key center for industrial growth and content provider data center deployments. The provider of 100G IP and transport services is expanding into Mexico to deliver wholesale IP transit, Ethernet, IPX, and cloud connect for the area's ISPs and content and cloud providers. 

Telia Carrier said that it is establishing its first Mexican point of presence (PoP) in Queretaro, a city north of Mexico City that is a key center for industrial growth and content provider data center deployments. The provider of 100G IP and transport services is expanding into Mexico to deliver wholesale IP transit, Ethernet, IPX, and cloud connect for the area's ISPs and content and cloud providers. Telia Carrier will enable ISPs and content providers in Mexico to connect to AS1299, its IP backbone, at what it attests are the highest speeds available in the region.

Telia Carrier presently serves various ISPs in the LATAM market using backhaul from strategic U.S. locations, including the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), which chose its global fiber backbone to deliver dedicated internet access to its Central American customers (see "Telia Carrier's global fiber backbone chosen by Costarricense de Electricidad for Central American internet access"). According to the company, it will now have a physical presence to address the region's Tier 2 and 3 operators, and ISPs that are currently underserved.

Mexico has a population of more than 120 million people, and its growing business environment offers important market opportunity, Telia Carrier asserts. A recent IFT report noted that broadband options are still limited in smaller markets, despite new government regulations that are driving broadband penetration.

By expanding into Mexico, Telia Carrier will offer significant backbone services for U.S.-based cloud, content, and service providers demanding low latency and high-speed connectivity in Mexico, and address area content providers' local, in-market connectivity demands.

"We see a huge demand in Mexico for IP transit, DDoS protection, and cloud connect services, and we already have many customers there, including mobile operators, local access providers, and ISPs amongst others," said Luis Velasquez, Telia Carrier's Mexico business manager. "ISPs and broadband carriers have had limited options to help them meet the needs of the Mexican market. The Mexican government is taking the initiative by opening the market and creating a competitive landscape, which will ultimately fuel the pace of digitalization in the country. With its formidable backbone, Telia Carrier now has the opportunity to directly serve mid-size ISPs looking for high-bandwidth solutions that will enable them to deliver better services and cloud connectivity to their customers."

Telia Carrier asserts that it is the first network to successfully transmit 1 Tbps in superchannels on its U.S. network, and its global fiber backbone was the first to be 100G-enabled in both Europe and North America. According to Dyn Research's global backbone rankings, Telia Carrier's global internet backbone, AS1299, is currently ranked number one. The service provider enables connectivity across the globe by connecting over 230 PoPs throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, including more than 80 PoPs in North America.
