Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says Brazilian national service provider Eletronet has chosen the vendor's 6500 Converged Packet Optical Platform to launch new wavelength services across its national backbone network for wholesale, Internet service providers, and webscale companies.

Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says Brazilian national service provider Eletronet has chosen the vendor's 6500 Converged Packet Optical Platform to launch new wavelength services across its national backbone network for wholesale, Internet service providers, and webscale companies. The 100G network, which can scale to 250G, enables Eletronet to provide reliable, flexible high-bandwidth, multi-site connectivity and bundled Internet protocol services to its customers, says Ciena.

Eletronet offers high-speed data transport over a 16,000-km national optical ground wire (OPGW) fiber-optic network that stretches across 18 Brazilian states with 155 points of presence (PoPs). According to Ciena, Eletronet plans to deliver connectivity to all communities it serves as part of Brazil's modernization project.

Eletronet will use the packet-optical transport platform to provide as much as 22 Tbps of capacity for what Ciena attests will be Brazil's fastest express route. Eletronet can provide up to 10GbE services, along with 100GbEwavelengths, with its new optical network capabilities, Ciena says. Eletronet also will be able to offer customer support in future service deployments, including virtualization and software-defined networking (SDN) applications.

"Ciena's packet-optical technology lays the foundation for Eletronet's nationwide 100G network," said Fabio Medina, Ciena's vice president and general manager of CALA. "Due to the programmable nature of these solutions, Eletronet can consistently assess the demands being placed on the network at any given time and dynamically adjust capacity as needed. This provides the cornerstone of an adaptive network that can proactively respond to changes in the network environment."

Eletronet is also a Ciena Partner Program member, working with the technology vendor to design advanced services and address new customer verticals. Last month, Eletronet chose Seaborn Networks and its international Seabras-1 submarine fiber-optic cable system to support Tier 1 dedicated Internet access (DIA) in Brazil (see "Eletronet chooses Seaborn's Seabras-1 submarine fiber-optic cable for Tier 1 DIA in Brazil").
