Telia Carrier said that the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has chosen its global fiber backbone to deliver dedicated internet access to its Central American customers. Telia Carrier said that the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has chosen its global fiber backbone to deliver dedicated internet access to its Central American customers. Costa Rica's state-owned telecommunications provider, ICE is the largest over-the-top (OTT) Central American operator and the number one retail ISP in Central America and the Caribbean, according to Dyn Research's IP Transit Intelligence (January 2018).

To meet increasing broadband service demands, ICE will obtain access to Telia Carrier's Tier 1 internet backbone, enabling ICE to launch the first 100G Central American IP transit services. Constructed on a redundant architecture, Telia Carrier's global backbone extends to the Maya-1 submarine cable system, which it asserts is the key gateway for Central America.

The 4,400 km MAYA-1 undersea cable system was originally built in 2000, and is an important aspect in addressing the demands of ICE along with Telia Carrier's IP transit services in the United States (see "Alcatel-Lucent preps MAYA-1 submarine cable system for 100G"). Additionally, Telia Carrier will offer Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection, ensuring that ICE can offer high standards of protection to its end customers and their business critical applications.

"ICE has climbed to the next level in the market by connecting its Internet backbone to Telia Carrier's 100G services. This capability marks an important step in meeting the growth of market demand and ensuring the development of telecommunications in Costa Rica," said Edison De Leon, Telia Carrier's regional director of Latin America and the Caribbean. "By providing DDoS protection integrated with our IPT services, we also provide ICE´s end customers with an inherently high level of protection against malicious attacks."

Telia Carrier is the first network to successfully transmit 1 Tbps in superchannels on its U.S. network, and its global fiber backbone was the first to be 100G-enabled in Europe and North America alike, the company attests. According to Dyn Research's global backbone rankings, Telia Carrier's global internet backbone, AS1299, is currently ranked number one. The service provider enables customers to connect to AS1299 at what it attests are the highest speeds in North America and has launched an overall expansion of its 100-Gbps fiber-optic network in North America to meet the demand for 100G services at the edge (see "Telia Carrier establishes PoP in EdgeConneX facility to extend its Phoenix network").

By connecting over 230 points of presence (PoPs) throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, including more than 80 PoPs in North America, the company enables connectivity across the globe.
