Fiber-optic network services provider Telia Carrier says it has established a new point of presence (PoP) within a recently built EdgeConneX facility to extend its Phoenix network.

EdgeConneX signed a strategic partnership agreement with Telia Carrier to provide access to the carrier's network and interconnection points via EdgeConneX's Edge Data Centers (EDCs) in July(see "EdgeConneX to offer access to Telia Carrier network, interconnection points"). In the initial partnership phase, Telia will link the wholesale provider's fiber-optic network to numerous facilities across EdgeConneX's portfolio of 30 EDCs in 28 markets worldwide, beginning with the Phoenix deployment.

Telia Carier has launched an overall expansion of its 100-Gbps fiber-optic network in North America to meet the demand for 100G services at the edge, including investments in the Phoenix region. According to Telia Carrier, its Phoenix expansion offers hyper-scale cloud networks and carriers in the region the ability to connect in-market, eliminating the need to backhaul traffic to other regions, and bypassing unnecessary latency.

The market for data center operators in Phoenix is strengthening because of its sustainable power costs and favorable tax rates, says Telia. With a population of over 1 million, Phoenix is ideal for companies from multiple industries, such as manufacturers, public research institutions, and high-tech companies, says the network operator. Dozens of Fortune 500 companies, including those specializing in clean technology and personalized medicine, call the Greater Phoenix region home.

"Companies in the financial, content and cloud markets have made phenomenal investments in data center facilities in Phoenix," said Art Kazmierczak, director of business development, Americas at Telia Carrier Inc. "Telia Carrier will support this increased demand for high-capacity services, providing reliable, high-performance connectivity for both established and start-up businesses that are entering the Phoenix market."

Telia Carrier is the first network to successfully transmit 1 Tbps in superchannels on its U.S. network, and its global fiber backbone was the first to be 100G-enabled in both Europe and North America, the company asserts.

By expanding its metro market, Telia Carrier will enable customers to connect to its global internet backbone, AS1299, at what it attests are the highest speeds in the region. The service provider has also made upgrades to its metro fiber-optic network in the region with the addition of new diversified route options to adjacent cities, including Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa, AZ.
