Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) says it is expanding its Equinix Internet Exchange into nine new metros in EMEA and the United States to enable internet traffic drivers, such as ISPs and content providers, to peer traffic effectively and broaden worldwide operations. Equinixsays the expansion began this quarter and will extend into early 2018 and will include Amsterdam, Denver, Dublin, Frankfurt, Houston, London, Manchester, Milan, and Stockholm.

Demand for networks to peer is progressing as IP traffic driven by cloud, mobile, IoT, video, gaming and data/analytics continues to escalate. Through peering capability expansion at the digital edge in proximity to dense populations of users, apps, data, and content, Equinix is meeting this demand, enabling service providers and their customers to enhance end-to-end network performance, speed, and reliability while decreasing overall IP transit expenses.

Equinix serves 1,100 ASNs and carries more than 7,500 Gbps global peak traffic in 31 metros across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC. The company says it will provide a global alternative internet exchange platform by delivering the Equinix Internet Exchange service and will continue partnering with other internet exchanges in key markets, including AMS-IX, LINX, DE-CIX, TorIX, and JPNAP.

"As IP traffic growth continues to accelerate, it is more important than ever that the IP peering community has a scalable, reliable and globally consistent internet exchange solution in all markets where they want to peer traffic," said Bill Long, Equinix vice president, Interconnection.

The Equinix Internet Exchange is currently offered in 11 American metros, 5 EMEA metros, and 6 APAC metros. The expansion news follows the Equinix announcement yesterday that it is planning the next phase of its global platform to provide digital customers on-demand connection to any other customer from any Equinix location by physically and virtually connecting its International Business Exchange (IBX) global data centers (see "Equinix to connect IBX global data centers via Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric"). The provider plans to offer its interconnection service suite, along with Cross Connects and Equinix Connect, within each metro where the company operates as it expands its footprint throughout the world.
