QTS Realty Trust (NYSE: QTS) says that fiber-optic network services provider Telia Carrier has deployed a connectivity node in QTS's Richmond mega data center. QTS, which offers data center, managed hosting, and cloud services internationally, plans to expand its ability to supply low latency connectivity with Telia Carrier's enhanced fiber-optic network and network services. The deployment will also enable QTS to reinforce what the company attests is its position as the largest provider in Richmond with more than 1 Tb of on-net capacity.

QTS' Richmond mega data center includes a 1.3 million square foot facility on a 220-acre campus. With more than 550,000 square feet of raised floor capacity, it offers capacity optimized for hyperscale and an array of additional IT infrastructure services. The campus currently features 12 MW, with the ability to expand to more than 400 MW on the campus.

QTS began building a mega data center campus in Ashburn, VA in October (see "QTS begins Ashburn, VA data center campus build"). According to QTS, Richmond's proximity to Ashburn to the north and the new Virginia Beach Cable Landing (VBCL) to the south increases the facility's appeal to large companies and hyperscale providers that have specific capacity and high-speed global reach requirements.

With a business-friendly tax reputation, low cost of living, and low cost of power, Richmond is increasingly becoming a business destination for IT companies who require IT outsourcing cost savings, QTS says. Facebook's recent announcement that it will build a $1 billion data center adjacent to the QTS Richmond campus also contributes to Richmond's recent popularity surge.

"The Telia Carrier partnership allows QTS to provide optimum proximity and connectivity for Richmond's thriving business community including a growing number of multinational corporations," said Brent Bensten, QTS chief technology officer, product development. "As Richmond's largest data center, QTS' partnership with the world's number one network backbone provider is a significant addition to our expanding connectivity capabilities."
