OFS introduces 'rollable ribbon' fiber-optic cable

OFS says it has introduced two new fiber-optic cable families enabled by the company's new rollable ribbon technology. They include the AccuTube+ Rollable Ribbon (RR) fiber-optic cable and rollable ribbon versions of its indoor/outdoor AccuRiser fiber cable line.

In the rollable ribbon cable, 12 fibers are connected intermittently by matrix material to form a flexible ribbon. This enables the ribbons to be rolled into tight bundles, which doubles the cable's fiber density, OFS says. Installers can then unroll these fibers into a ribbon that can be spliced with traditional flat ribbon machines and procedures. OFS asserts that rollable ribbon cable offers space efficiency and fiber density improvements over traditional ribbon cable approaches.

"Users can enjoy the significant time and cost savings benefits of 12-fiber mass fusion splicing, as compared with single fiber splicing, while getting the highest fiber density," said Eric Whitham, OSP cable product manager. "In outside plant (OSP) installations, customers can double the fiber count viable for a particular duct size."

For example, AccuTube+ Rollable Ribbon fiber-optic cable can be installed in common 1.25- and 2-inch ducts, respectively, and are available with 1728 and 3456 fibers. Rollable ribbon technology also has led to 144- and 288-fiber versions of the OFS AccuRiser indoor/outdoor fiber cable that the company asserts offers a better alternative to traditional cables where space and cable storage space remain at a premium.

OFS will display these new fiber-optic cables at the ISE Expo in Orlando, FL, September 12-14, and at the CAPRE's Fifth Annual Washington, D.C. & Mid-Atlantic Data Center Summit in Ashburn, VA, September 12-14.
