ADTRAN offers G.fast with Dynamic Time Allocation

Oct. 20, 2016
ADTRAN Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) says it has added Dynamic Time Allocation (DTA) capabilities to its G.fast offerings. The capabilities enable ADTRAN's systems to dynamically allocated G.fast's bandwidth pool to enable the support of higher-speed upstream and downstream services than would be possible otherwise. It also helps to enable G.fast to run over media that require low crosstalk, such as coaxial cable, which widens its applicability to multiple-dwelling unit (MDU) deployments.

The company's DTA technology is similar to the "Dynamic Time Assignment" for which G.fast chipmaker Sckipio recently announced support (and the timing of the announcements is likely not coincidental). DTA enables dynamic, rapid allocation of upstream and downstream transmission bandwidth to enable better use of the available aggregate capacity pool. As a result, service providers can offer and support greater upstream and downstream service rates than would be possible with a static assignment of capacity in each direction – as much as 2X, ADTRAN says.

ADTRAN says it will make DTA available as a software feature on its 500G platforms, and that a Tier 1 U.S. operator will deploy the technology as part of a G.fast deployment later this year. ADTRAN did not further identify the service provider, but it is widely believed to be AT&T.
