Italy's Uno Communications has awarded a contract to SM Optics, part of the SIAE Microelettronica group, for a fiber-optic network transformation project. SM Optics will help Uno upgrade its Ethernet and SDH infrastructure to Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS).

SM Optics will supply packet-optical transport systems and WDM equipment as well as network management and network engineering services as part of the project. These latter services will include network design, traffic engineering, and deployment.

The move to a converged MPLS network based on 10-Gbps wavelengths will eliminate the bottlenecks created by the existing non-homogeneous architecture, SM Optics says. It also will increase Uno's fiber-optic core network capacity to support increasing wholesales services.

"Improving the network capacity contributes to improving the whole network reliability, guaranteeing the SLA of the business services and the multimedia streaming requirement of the residential customers," says Berardo Bonaduce of Uno Communications. "Based over our experienced with the currently deployed SIAE Microelettronica wireless transmission equipment, we are confident of the services capabilities of the group."

"This network transformation results in a solid, future-proof solution, allowing Uno Communications to run new high-capacity services while slashing the maintenance costs on existing old generation products," says Sergio Colombo, sales director, Italy, with SIAE Microelettronica. "This award reinforces the existing relationship with Uno Communications. We are happy to contribute building the network of a growing service provider."
