Juniper Networks rolled out new optically focused capabilities for its PTX3000 Packet Transport Switch as well as its MX Series routers at OFC 2016 in Anaheim, CA.

Juniper Networks rolled out new optically focused capabilities for its PTX3000 Packet Transport Switch as well as its MX Series routers at OFC 2016 in Anaheim, CA.

The new optical technology included the first coherent transmission capabilities for the MX Series. Juniper displayed the MIC3-100G-DWDM Optical Transport Network (OTN) line card for the company's MX960/480/240 platforms. The card offers a single port of coherent-enabled 100 Gbps via a CFP2-ACO pluggable optical transceiver with a reach capability of 2,000 km. The card will support soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC), high-gain FEC (HG-FEC), and GFEC.

Juniper posted a blog written by Per Nihlén, chief technology officer at Swedish R&E network operator SUNET. The blog describes the use of such integrated coherent optics in the MX Series, alongside optical transmission systems from ADVA Optical Networking, to meet its requirements efficiently.

The router and switch company also touted a new generation of coherent photonic integrated circuit (PIC) for the PTX3000. The 5x100G DWDM PIC enables line cards with 1 Tbps of capacity per slot leveraging pluggable optical transceivers.

Juniper Networks also announced optical layer support for the Junos Space Connectivity Services Director (CSD). The new capability extends the CSD's visibility, control, and management capabilities to both the IP and optical layers to enable unified fault, configuration, and performance management.
