Xtera Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: XCOM) says it completed the marine installation of a repeatered undersea cable system in the fourth quarter of 2015. This is the second repeatered submarine network the company has deployed.

Xtera declined to reveal the name of the submarine cable system, but did say that it runs approximately 1,500 km in the Atlantic. The dimensions match a U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) project for which Xtera won a contract in 2014 (see "Xtera to supply submarine network equipment for DISA undersea cable"). The undersea fiber-optic network leverages Xtera's Raman-based repeaters.

"This new repeatered project has been deployed after the successful upgrade of the High capacity, Undersea Guernsey Optical-fiber (HUGO) subsea cable system connecting Porthcurno (UK), Guernsey (UK) and Lannion (France), where Xtera's next generation wideband repeaters were inserted into the existing cable plant to increase system capacity," said Stuart Barnes, senior vice president and general manager, Xtera Submarine Business (see "HUGO submarine cable system deploys Xtera repeater").
