Fiber-optic network services provider Lightower Fiber Networks announced before the holidays that it will expand its footprint in Baltimore, MD, through the acquisition of assets from HarborLite Networks. The newly acquired fiber cable links will enable Lightower to connect with nearly all major office buildings, data centers, and sports venues in downtown Baltimore, according to the company.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"This network addition helps solidify Lightower's presence in Baltimore, a city in which we continue to invest and expand," explained Rob Shanahan, CEO of Lightower. "Our all-fiber solutions are now available to all enterprises, educational institutions, health care businesses, media companies, government agencies, and wireless and wireline carriers. With this network acquisition, Lightower continues its aggressive expansion in the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as throughout our entire service area."

Downtown on-network data centers include those at 111 Market, 300 W. Lexington, 506 Central, 323 N. Charles, and 1401 E. Russell. Meanwhile, Baltimore customers will gain access to more than 15,000 service locations throughout the Lightower footprint. This includes regional data centers in the Ashburn, VA, area. Lightower is also can provide connections to Amazon Web Services as well as other cloud providers.

The acquisition complements Lightower's own fiber-optic cable deployments in the city, and follows the 2015 acquisition of Fibertech Networks (see "Lightower completes Fibertech Networks merger").
