Fiber-optic network infrastructure provider CityFibre says it will partner with ISP HighNet to offer gigabit broadband access network services to businesses in Glasgow. CityFibre says it plans to begin deploying fiber to the premises (FTTP) infrastructure in the central district of Glasgow early in 2016, then expand from there.

HighNet's channel partner's customers will be among the first to receive service. However, CityFibre expects to offer services to as many as 7,000 city center businesses within a year, and up to 15,000 businesses across the city will have access when the FTTH deployment has completed.

CityFibre says the business-centric fiber-optic broadband network could be used to launch residential services as well.

"We're delighted to be partnering with HighNet to launch Scotland's newest Gigabit City," said Greg Mesch, CityFibre CEO. "HighNet have made this project possible, and their strong customer base and impressive partner network will be crucial to its success. This announcement marks our third Gigabit City project in Scotland, and upon its completion, CityFibre will have an established network presence in Scotland's four largest cities, making us the largest wholesale fiber infrastructure provider in the country after BT Openreach."

The Glasgow deployment follows other CityFibre FTTP builds in Aberdeen, Coventry, Edinburgh, Peterborough, and York.
