TeraXion says it has been sampling a modulator based on indium phosphide (InP) capable of supporting single-wavelength 400-Gbps applications since the beginning of this year. The company plans to show off the device at ECOC in Valencia, Spain next week.

The component supplier introduced the modulator at ECOC in 2014 (see "TeraXion unveils packaged InP IQ modulator at ECOC 2014"). Since then, the company says it has delivered modulator samples to both academic and industry customers for applications at 100 Gbps and above.

"TeraXion has been sampling 400-Gbps-ready IQ modulators since the beginning of this year, and customers are actively advising us that their general performance is superior to lithium niobate modulators, particularly at higher symbol rates," asserted Ian Woods, vice president, High Speed Photonic Components at TeraXion.

The InP DP-IQM package can support bandwidths up to 40 GHz in a small, Vπ efficient package, according to Woods. "Our modulators indeed offer unique low Vπ drive voltage down to 1.5 V," he explained.

The modulators are now commercially available, he added.
