Fujitsu offers CFP2-ACO coherent optical transceiver

Fujitsu Optical Components Ltd. (FOC) has jumped in line for what should be a parade of CFP2 Analog Coherent Optics (CFP2-ACO) announcements at OFC by revealing it should have such an optical transceiver ready for release in the third quarter of this year.

Fujitsu Optical Components Ltd. (FOC) has jumped in line for what should be a parade of CFP2 Analog Coherent Optics (CFP2-ACO) announcements at OFC by revealing it should have such an optical transceiver ready for release in the third quarter of this year.

The CFP2-ACO, boosted by work within the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF; see "OIF to explore Transport SDN, CFP2"), promises support of at least 100 Gbps via coherent transmission technology for a variety of applications, particularly the metro. The ACO design removes the digital signal processing (DSP) ASIC from the module; it ends up on the line card. The result is a smaller, lower power approach than alternatives such as the CFP and the OIF MSA that increases line card density.

FOC says that its CFP2-ACO will leverage new optical devices developed in-house. These include a compact semiconductor optical modulator and an ultra -compact integrated coherent receiver. The optical module will support both 100G DP-QPSK as well as 200G via DP-16QAM via a linear modulator driver. The receiver has demonstrated optical output power of more than -2 dBm with 16QAM modulation, FOC adds.

The company asserts the optical transceiver will exhibit highly stable performance across environmental changes. It will be compliant to the Class 2 standard.

FOC says it incorporated development results from the Photonics Electronics Technology Research Association (PETRA) with support from New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as well.

The module will be on display at OFC in FOC's booth, #900.
