TIM Brasil adds more 100-Gbps optical transport via Xtera

TIM Brasil has deployed additional 100-Gbps optical transport equipment from Xtera Communications, Inc., the systems house says. The most recent deployment has seen TIM Brasil use the Xtera's packet-optical transport systems to upgrade long-haul fiber-optic networks that link Manaus, Porto Velho, and Cuiabá in north and center west Brazil.

TIM Brasil has deployed additional 100-Gbps optical transport equipment from Xtera Communications, Inc., the systems house says. The most recent deployment has seen TIM Brasil use the Xtera's packet-optical transport systems to upgrade long-haul fiber-optic networks that link Manaus, Porto Velho, and Cuiabá in north and center west Brazil.

The deployment is part of TIM Brasil's effort to upgrade a large ring in the northern part of Brazil with 100G technology, across an expanse that represents about 50% of the country. By illuminating the Manaus to Porto Velho fiber route (1,010 km) alongside the Porto Velho to Cuiabá route (1,645 km), TIM has added more than 2,600 km of high-capacity links to the region. Both routes use aerial fiber-optic cables over long spans with high-loss optical fibers. The use of Raman technology is crucial to the success of the network over such fibers, Xtera says.

This deployment follows the previous LT Amazonas 2013 deployment, which also implemented Xtera's 100G and Raman technology (see "TIM Brasil, Xtera deploy 100G optical network over 2400 km" and "TIM Brasil, Xtera deploy 100G over challenging G.653 DSF route").

"This benefits not only our operations and customers but the population of the entire region by enabling cost effective broadband services."
