Cable MSO Cox Communications says it will launch 1-Gbps broadband services to residents of Phoenix, AZ, later this month. The company promised to extend the new service, branded "G1GABLAST," to additional cities this year and "market-wide" by 2016.

In addition to Internet services "up to" 1 Gbps, Cox also will offer a high-speed Wi-Fi router, 1 TB of cloud storage, Cox Security Suite and Family Protection, and 10 email boxes with 15 GB of storage each as part of the G1GABLAST package. The package will retail for $69.99 a month when combined with Cox termed its "most popular service bundles."

The service will be available first in parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The company said it also plans to roll out the service in Las Vegas and Omaha, and in new developments in all Cox markets nationwide. The service rollout is on a more aggressive timetable than indicated in the cable MSO’s original announcement of its gigabit plans (see "Cox outlines gigabit broadband plans").

The gigabit services offering would seem to be in response to similar moves by CenturyLink (see "CenturyLink targets Omaha for 1-Gbps FTTP network pilot" and "CenturyLink adds Las Vegas to 1 Gbps FTTP pilot").

"We are excited to deliver the choice of gigabit speeds to our customers," said Cox Communications President Pat Esser. "Coupled with our 2,300 employees in the Valley and more than 20,000 nationwide, our latest investments and the deployment of the fastest speeds available are powering economic growth and development for businesses and residents of the communities we serve."
