Coriant offers SDN suite

Optical transport and router systems vendor Coriant has unveiled the Coriant Transcend SDN Solution, which it says creates a programming environment that can leverage open interfaces and software-defined networking (SDN) concepts that will enable on-demand, application-centric service creation and network monetization. The company also says it is engaged in a live SDN service trial of enterprise end-users with a Tier 1 service provider in Asia it did not identify.

Optical transport and router systems vendor Coriant has unveiled the Coriant Transcend SDN Solution, which it says creates a programming environment that can leverage open interfaces and software-defined networking (SDN) concepts that will enable on-demand, application-centric service creation and network monetization. The company also says it is engaged in a live SDN service trial of enterprise end-users with a Tier 1 service provider in Asia it did not identify.

The Coriant Transcend SDN Solution comprises a pair of components:

  1. An SDN software suite that includes the Coriant Transcend Orchestrator (which is based on work within the OpenDaylight Project), the Coriant Transcend Transport Controller, the Coriant Transcend Application Suite, and integration of Open Virtual Switch (OVS) functionality for network functions virtualization (NFV).
  2. The ability to tie SDN into its Dynamic Optical Cloud product and services portfolio, which includes Coriant’s packet optical transport platforms (mTera UTP, 7100, hiT 7300, and 7090) and smart routers (the 8600 and 8800).

Coriant says the Transcend SDN Solution can be used to enable application-based forwarding, network virtualization and defragmentation, and zero-touch service provisioning. The company says that it is addressing requirements for multivendor operation by "actively working with" other technology companies that also address data center connectivity, mobile backhaul, and IP/optical transport infrastructure applications.

The company had a chance to prove its SDN bona fides through participation in the recently completed Optical Internetworking Forum/Open Networking Foundation transport SDN demonstration (see "OIF and ONF enjoy joint Transport SDN demonstration success"). The company provided a "pre-release" SDN controller and hypervisor technology (as well as optical transport gear) to the demo, which successfully demonstrated bandwidth provisioning in a multi-carrier, multi-vendor, multi-layer scenario. The controller interacted with controllers from other vendors during the demo, but not directly with other vendor’s network elements, according to Coriant sources.
