TeraXion unveils packaged InP IQ modulator at ECOC 2014

Sept. 11, 2014
Optoelectronic components and modules supplier TeraXion Inc. has introduced its first-generation indium-phosphide (InP) dual-polarization IQ optical modulator for 100G and 400G long-haul and metro networks.

Optoelectronic components and modules supplier TeraXion Inc. has introduced its first-generation indium-phosphide (InP) dual-polarization IQ optical modulator for 100G and 400G long-haul and metro networks.

The component was likely developed with technology acquired from COGO Optronics last year (see "Teraxion acquires modulator expertise from COGO Optronics")

The company says the device is the first InP modulator that offers equivalent performance to the lithium niobate legacy counterpart with a smaller footprint and with much lower Vpi. The IQ modulator has a typical Vpi of 1.5 V with a bandwidth of 35 GHz and 9 dB insertion loss.

The modulator is based on a nested Mach-Zehnder configuration which enables 100G DP-QPSK and 200/400G QAM optical transmission.

The device includes monitoring photodiodes and a polarization beam combiner in a small (41x19 mm) package that enables direct integration on a line card.

The dual-polarization IQ Modulator will be displayed from September 22-24 at the ECOC 2014 Conference and Exhibition in Cannes, France, booth #424.
