DFN-Verein turns to ECI Telecom for 100G fiber-optic network upgrade
Optical transport systems specialist ECI Telecom says it has helped Deutsches Forschungsnetz e.V. (DFN-Verein) of Germany upgrade the X-WiN research network to 100 Gbps.
X-WiN comprises more than 11,000 km of dark fiber. DFN-Verein uses the fiber-optic network to supply such services as voice over IP, videoconferencing, roaming, and public key infrastructure for digital certification to more than 750 universities and research institutes, as well access to other research and education networks.
DFN-Verein selected ECI in 2012 to deploy its Apollo Optimized Multi-Layer Transport (OMLT) packet-optical transport system in 69 locations within X-WiN after what the systems house described as “a rigorous tender process, in which key criteria were highest capacity and the flexibility to enable new connections with short lead times” (see "DFN-Verein taps ECI Telecom for X-WiN research network"). This upgrade to the deployed Apollo systems involved the installation of plug-in 100G cards for connection between routers. This was accomplished without other changes in the network, and therefore without no disruptions or interruptions in service.
DFN has been experiencing increasing demands from its users in terms of bandwidth and service delivery times. Deployment of ECI’s 100G technology allows DFN to efficiently support these and future requirements. The 100G connections between X-WiNs core routers were brought online without any disruption of existing services or the need for changes to the underlying network,” according to Dr. Stefan Piger, speaking for the DFN Association.
