Infinera offers Instant Bandwidth on DTN-X packet optical transport platform

Nov. 12, 2012
Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) has introduced “Instant Bandwidth,” a new feature for its DTN-X packet optical transport platform. Through a combination of new hardware and software, the Instant Bandwidth capability enables carriers to rapidly provision new services by being able to access the DTN-X’s 500-Gbps superchannels in 100-Gbps increments. Increment can be combined to create a single logical pool of bandwidth, which reduces stranded bandwidth, the company says.

A new DWDM card for the DTN-X, an upgrade to the system’s DNA network management system, new programming that enables rapid delivery of client-side bandwidth and services without link or node re-engineering form the building blocks of the Instant Bandwidth capability. The feature offers “one-click” provisioning of new services to enable a success-based business model as well as utility-based billing.

The new capability is currently available, with TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC) the first customer. TSIC will use the DTN-X with Instant Bandwidth on its 18,000-km fiber-optic network in North America.

“Infinera’s DTN-X with Instant Bandwidth gives us a competitive edge, enabling significantly shorter customer delivery times for 100G services, and allows us to offer one of the most advanced and scalable networks in North America,” said Erik Hallberg, president of TeliaSonera International Carrier, in a press release announcing the deployment.

The ability to break up the DTN-X’s 500-Gbps superchannels into 100-Gbps chunks is new, and will be made available as an option rather than a standard feature, says an Infinera source. Instant Bandwidth expands the addressable market of the DTN-X to customers who don’t need 500-Gbps of capacity all at once, said the source.

The Instant Bandwidth feature must be manually triggered and is not part of the DTN-X’s automatic fault restoration capabilities. The source acknowledged that carriers have already begun asking whether the system’s restoration features can be expanded to include the feature’s capabilities, the source said.
