ADVA Optical Networking, Juniper Networks to supply KINBER R&E network

Information systems consultancy TorreyPoint says it will use equipment from ADVA Optical Networking (FSE: ADV) and Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) to build a fiber-optic network for the Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research (KINBER).

Information systems consultancy TorreyPoint says it will use equipment from ADVA Optical Networking (FSE: ADV) and Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) to build a fiber-optic network for the Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research (KINBER). The fiber-optic network represents the foundation of PennREN, the Pennsylvania Research and Education Network, a high speed fiber broadband network providing 100Mbit/s to 10Gbit/s Ethernet connectivity across Pennsylvania. The KINBER project will use broadband stimulus funds.

"KINBER's mission is to serve Pennsylvania through the establishment and sustainment of a high-speed research and education network that connects our institutions of higher learning with K-12 programs to advance the education, health care, work force development and training programs across the Commonwealth," said Jeff Reel, Executive Director at KINBER. "We selected TorreyPoint because their partnership with ADVA Optical Networking and Juniper Networks demonstrates a strong, integrated team with a commitment to building value-added networks."

ADVA Optical Networking will supply fiber-optic transport equipment for the project, most likely its FSP 3000 platform. This is the latest of several research and education (R&E) networks for which the company has delivered equipment (see, for example, “Lonestar Education and Research Network extends metro network with ADVA Optical Networking DWDM platform”). Juniper Networks will supply routing equipment. The two companies have a co-marketing arrangement. They also are partnering on Juniper Networks’ PTX Packet Transport Switch.
