JUNE 19, 2008 -- The platform will be used to enhance the metro transport infrastructure within Verizon markets in the United States to support and consolidate SONET, Ethernet, and wavelength services traffic in a variety of applications.

JUNE 19, 2008 -- Fujitsu Network Communications (search for Fujitsu), a supplier of optical and wireless networking technologies, has announced that Verizon (search for Verizon) has selected the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 platform for deployment as a result of the Verizon packet OTP RFP process. The platform will be used to enhance the metro transport infrastructure within Verizon markets in the United States to support and consolidate SONET, Ethernet, and wavelength services traffic in a variety of applications. In the FiOS network this infrastructure will facilitate deployment of packet-based services for Verizon customers, including high-definition video-on-demand, higher-speed Internet access, and advanced voice services.

The FLASHWAVE 9500 packet ONP provides the modular integration of Ethernet, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM), and SONET transport technologies into a single addressable optical networking class element. The platform's pluggable ROADM option and patent-pending universal switch fabric allow both circuit-based traffic and packet-based traffic to be transported in its native format to create a universal optical infrastructure.

"With its high capacity and ultimate flexibility to support any kind of transport networking, including SONET, DWDM, and Ethernet services, the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 packet optical networking platform (packet ONP) provides a critical platform for inter-office transport and Enterprise Ethernet/IP services, as well as FiOS services, including video-on-demand (VoD) and broadcast channel delivery," says Stu Elby, vice president of network architecture for Verizon Communications. "The platform's forward-looking capabilities will allow Verizon to accommodate unpredictable bandwidth, traffic types, and growth patterns in the most cost-effective manner."

Verizon will be utilizing several NETSMART management software tools that are common to Fujitsu optical networking products to capitalize on the operational familiarity among personnel in the Verizon regions. The NETSMART 1500 Element Management System (EMS) will allow Verizon to support inventory flow-back, provisioning flow-through and fault management for its entire network of Fujitsu network elements. The NETSMART 2000 optical network design tool, which Fujitsu says removes the complexity of creating DWDM/ROADM optical network designs, will be used to expedite deployment of the FLASHWAVE 9500 platform.

"As network operators transition their infrastructure to support IP-based services, the optical networking market is going through a radical transformation, with equipment vendors introducing converged platforms that support WDM, TDM, and packet transport and services," says Ron Kline, research director of optical networks at Ovum. "Through this win the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 platform is well positioned to grab a piece of the total market for converged packet optical networking, which we estimate could reach $2.4 billion by 2012."
