Sycamore adds 2.5-Terabit ASON-powered switch

JUNE 21, 2007 -- The SN 16000 MC-1024 delivers 2.5 Terabits of multiservice switching capacity in what the company claims is the industry's smallest footprint, allowing new and existing customers to optimize their transmission networks for seamless, cost-effective scalability and agile broadband networking, say company representatives.

JUNE 21, 2007 -- Sycamore Networks Inc. (search for Sycamore Networks), has announced the addition of the SN 16000 MC-1024 to its portfolio of intelligent optical switching equipment. Built on the foundation of Sycamore's networking intelligence and packet-enabled systems architecture, the SN 16000 MC-1024 delivers 2.5 Terabits of multiservice switching capacity in what the company claims is the industry's smallest footprint, allowing new and existing customers to optimize their transmission networks for seamless, cost-effective scalability and agile broadband networking, say company representatives.

Empowered by system software enhancements and the flexible Universal Service Card (USC), the SN 16000 MC-1024 sets a new benchmark in core switching scalability while leveraging proven, feature-rich capabilities, including ASON-based optical mesh networking, automated service provisioning, and intelligent Ethernet transport, says Sycamore.

"By doubling the switching capacity within a broad portfolio of products that share common signaling and routing software and intelligent bandwidth management capabilities, Sycamore enables network operators to reduce operations costs while optimizing their broadband architectures for the dynamic, high-bandwidth services driving network growth."

With a fully non-blocking, any-port-to-any-port switch fabric, the SN 16000 MC-1024 delivers up to 2.5 Tbits/sec of total optical switching capacity in what the company says is the industry's smallest footprint (three bays) and allows network operators to provision a mix of packet and circuit services, including Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), 10 GbE, SONET, and SDH. The SN 16000 MC-1024 supports up to 1,024 OC-48/STM-16 ports, 256 OC-192/STM-64 ports, 1,280 GbE ports and 128 10-GbE ports. With the ability to deliver a flexible mix of service interfaces in a compact, high-density switching architecture, the SN 16000 MC-1024 eliminates the cost and complexity of port-constrained stacked switching solutions that result in difficult to manage inter-trunk connections and service-disrupting growth, note Sycamore representatives.

Furthermore, says Sycamore, its multi-chassis systems architecture and advanced switching software allow fixed line and mobile operators to scale as regional and core transport networks evolve to accommodate an increase in high-bandwidth, multiservice traffic. Leveraging the same service interface cards as other Sycamore multi-chassis (MC) systems, the SN 16000 MC-1024 enables customers with deployments of 1.2 Tbits/sec switching nodes to double system capacity in the same footprint and without disruption to existing traffic, reports the company. By sharing common service interface modules, network operators can further reduce sparing costs.

Optimized for large switching centers, the SN 16000 MC-1024 system adds additional scalability and density to Sycamore's family of optical switching products, all of which share common ASON/GMPLS-compliant networking software and comprehensive management capabilities for intelligent, end-to-end bandwidth management. Sycamore says its common systems software enables network operators to simplify end-to-end service provisioning and capacity management through the automation of operational tasks, while improving service availability and network resiliency with next-generation optical mesh protection and restoration capabilities.
