ADVA offers passive point-to-multipoint G.metro 10G optical transceivers

The self-tuning 10-Gbps SFP+ DWDM modules, paired with a suite of optical filters, support passive network point-to-multipoint transmission for such applications as business services delivery and mobile fronthaul/backhaul.

ADVA (FSE: ADV) has unveiled point-to-multipoint optical transceivers that conform to the ITU-T’s G.698.4 G.metro recommendations. The self-tuning 10-Gbps SFP+ DWDM modules, paired with a suite of optical filters, support passive network point-to-multipoint transmission for such applications as business services delivery and mobile fronthaul/backhaul.

The optical transceivers are designed to be used in either the company’s FSP-150 platforms or platforms from other vendors. When deployed, the auto-tuning feature enables zero-touch provisioning. Particularly when combined with ADVA’s ALM, the modules also support health and status monitoring on a separate communications channel. The transceivers will support single- and dual-fiber operation as well as native transport of Ethernet CPRI or eCPRI services up to 10 Gbps.

ADVA has worked on the technology for several years, including field trials (see, for example, “China Unicom tests ADVA G.metro WDM-PON for mobile fronthaul”). Stephan Rettenberger, senior vice president, marketing and investor relations, at ADVA, notes that ITU-T G.698.4 was designed with tunable SFPs as the modules of choice. Therefore, the architecture hasn’t had to wait for the development of low-cost tunable transceivers in the manner that NG-PON2 has (see “NG-PON2 tunable transceiver work shows signs of progress”). The G.metro transceivers are the result of co-design efforts with partners Rettenberger declined to identify. He said that there is a development pathway toward the 25-Gbps operation 5G mobile support networks are expected to require.

The G.metro optical transceivers are currently available.
