Virginia Beach’s Globalinx Data Centers announces three-phased data center campus

Jan. 29, 2018

Globalinx Data Centers announced a new, 150,000-square-foot, three-phased data center campus, located in the 300-acre publicly developed business park, Corporate Landing Business Park. According to Virginia Beach's carrier-neutral cable landing and terrestrial meet me point (MMP) for international connectivity to Europe, Africa, and South America, the data center is designed to deliver multi-phase expansion capability.

Phase I is a 10,750-square-foot facility constructed on a privately-owned 11.5-acre campus. The data center is equipped with high-capacity space for network carriers, submarine cable operators, enterprises, and hyperscale providers to collocate their networking equipment in a secure location and interconnect in the building's meet me room (MMR).

Providing direct access to severalundersea cable systems and terrestrial networks, the facility has access to over 30 MWS of scalable critical power delivered via two independent substations by Dominion Energy. According to Globalinx, Dominion Energy has certified Corporate Landing as an official data center site.

Globalinx says it has started work designing and planning for Phase-II. The completed Virginia Beach campus will span over 150,000 square feet of colocation data center space with variable power densities to address customers' demands.

"By building a carrier-neutral colocation facility in Corporate Landing Park, Globalinx is providing a platform essential for facilitating interconnections between subsea capacity and terrestrial fiber networks," said Warren Harris, Virginia Beach economic development director. "This further advances our goal of making Virginia Beach a truly digital port city and will help attract additional subsea projects for true diversity from the subsea cable systems in the New York-New Jersey region."

Recently, the City of Virginia Beach decreased the business property tax rate on computer and peripheral equipment used in data centers to $0.40 per $100, at 40 percent of assessed value, Globalinx says. New businesses to Virginia Beach are also entitled to receive a business license fee rate reduced to $50 annually for their first two taxable years in the city.

"Virginia Beach offers some of the most attractive incentives for data centers in the country," said Greg Twitt, Globalinx founder and president. "The appeal of competitive tax rates and local incentives combined with robust power capabilities at truly reasonable rates is amplified by access to two of the most modern subsea cable systems ever to be built. No other location along the Eastern Seaboard offers this opportunity, making Virginia Beach the number one destination for mid-Atlantic connectivity between North America, South America, Europe and North Africa."

The Globalinx data center campus is located in close proximity to the Telxius Cable Landing Station in Virginia Beach. Telxius is the global telecommunications infrastructure company that Telefónica created in 2016 (see "Telefónica spins out infrastructure assets to create Telxius").
