British Telecom re-ups with Ciena for 6500 packet-optical transport systems
Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says it has signed a 5-year contract renewal with BT that will see the UK incumbent carrier deploy the Ciena 6500 Converged Packet Optical Platform. The UK-wide deployments began this summer and will bring 100-Gbps wavelength capabilities to the service provider's fiber-optic network.
"With the growth in high bandwidth services, it's more important than ever that we continue to innovate and provide flexible network solutions to our customers. We've built a great relationship with Ciena over the past five years and we're pleased to continue working with them," explained Neil J. McRae, chief architect at BT.
BT and Ciena have a long history together, including work on the former's 21st Century Network initiative as well as various trials (see "BT finalizes 21CN contracts with Ciena, Huawei, Lucent, and Siemens" and "BT and Ciena trial 800G superchannel" for example).
