Nokia leads Broadband Access Abstraction project for Broadband Forum

Nokia says it is leading the Broadband Access Abstraction (BAA) project, an initiative to drive the adoption of software-defined access networks. The effort, part of the Broadband Forum's (BBF's) Open Broadband (OB) program, will attempt to reach its goals through the contribution of open source software aligned with industry standards from participants such as Nokia.

Nokia says the project's purpose is to define a software reference implementation for an open BAA layer. Development of the BAA layer will reduce dependency on proprietary hardware and software through the provision of standardized interfaces and decoupling implementation from the underlying hardware.

Working within the OB program will shorten feedback loops and minimize development efforts and testing cycles, Nokia says. The resulting open source code will be aligned with BBF standard data models. The open source code will offer common management functionality that will make operating multi-vendor, multi-technology broadband access networks easier and enable operators and vendors to focus on development of innovative cloud capabilities, says Nokia.

"We are excited to have Nokia be the first vendor in the Forum to contribute open source code under the Broadband Access Abstraction open source initiative," said Robin Mersh, Broadband Forum CEO. "This will help reduce the time and efforts needed to achieve interoperability and help operators to develop a framework for cloud infrastructure in the central office. By aligning open source code to industry specifications, the Forum can effectively collaborate with the open source community to aid in development and testing."
