MACOM unveils PAM4-based single-lambda 100-Gbps component family
MACOM Technology Solutions Inc. (MACOM) has unveiled its 100G Single Lambda Solution, a family of components for the development of QSFP-based optical modules that leverage PAM4 modulation for data center applications. As the IEEE P802.3bs Task Force has adopted single-wavelength 100G as a building block for 400 Gigabit Ethernet (see "IEEE P802.3bs Task Force adopts serial 100G for 400 Gigabit Ethernet"), the company positions the component family as scaling to such transmission rates.
The 100G Single Lambda Solution portfolio includes:
- MACOM PRISM Mixed Signal PHY (MATP-10025)
- 53-GBaud PAM4 Single Lambda 100GL-PIC (MAOP-L561PP)
- 1x53-GBaud PAM4 transimpedance amplifier (TIA, the MATA-005817)
- 4x53-GBaud PAM4 TIA (MATA-03819 and MATA-03919)
- 1x53-GBaud PAM4 PIN Photodiode BSP56A/QA
- a PAM4 TOSA/ROSA for 53-GBaud applications.
MACOM highlights the MATP-10025 PRISM mixed-signal PHY and MAOP-L561PP L-PIC as key elements of the component set. The PRISM PHY leverages a 16-nm FinFET process node to offer integrated linear laser driver, forward error correction, and DSP-based equalizer functions. The MAOP-L561PP 100GL-PIC is the latest addition to MACOM's L-PIC photonic integrated circuit (PIC) family (see, for example, "MACOM CWDM4 L-PIC targets 100G data center networks"). The L-PICs marry a silicon photonics based PIC with an integrated laser; the integration leverages the Etched Facet Technology (EFT) technology MACOM acquired with BinOptics (see "MACOM to add laser technology via BinOptics acquisition").
The Single Lambda 100G Solution undoubtedly benefits from technology and expertise acquired with AppliedMicro as well (see "AppliedMicro demos single-wavelength 100G PAM4 silicon" and "MACOM to acquire AppliedMicro").
"Cloud data centers have moved quickly to deploy first-generation 100G modules, but insatiable data demands, unrelenting cost pressures, and compressing upgrade cycles require a new generation of modules that enable data centers to eliminate capacity, throughput, and cost constraints," said Kevin LeFebvre, a principal analyst at market research firm Ovum. "MACOM's Single Lambda 100G Solution embodies the technology innovation and 100G-to-400G roadmap acceleration needed to keep pace with unabated cloud data center growth."
MACOM will offer a video demonstration of its 100G Single Lambda Solution at CIOE (September 6 – 9, Shenzhen, China, Booth #1A32) and ECOC (September 17 – 21, Gothenburg, Sweden, Booth #117).
