VeEX Inc. has enhanced its OPX-BOX optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) line with the OPX-BOXe. The new OTDR is an update of the company's OPX-BOX+ test instrument.

Many of the upgrades focus on communications capabilities. For example, the OPX-BOXe OTDR is designed to enable both WiFi and Bluetooth connections to be active and available in standby mode at all times. Improvements to the WiFi/BT/PAN capabilities enable users to control the OTDR without a permanent connection. The BT PAN profile enables communication with BT devices, including iPads and iPhones. The low energy BT (BLE) feature offers compatibility with BT devices including the iPad and iPhone as well.

The system will support remote control via a web browser without use of VeEX's Fiberizer Mobile software application. However, technicians can use the Fiberizer software to control the OPX-BOXe remotely from mobile devices. Meanwhile, the OPX-BOXe supports WiFi operation via access point or client modes to connect to user's network. The system also features Ethernet/RJ45 support via Micro-USB OTG adapter for wired connectivity. Fiberscope tethering via USB supports image transfer and viewing on the host device, complete with IEC Pass/Fail inspection.

On the performance end, the OPX-BOXe offers faster measurements with direct *.sor file transfer to the host control device. Onboard data processing via the built-in CPU is less susceptible to communication interruptions, VeEX says. The OTDR offers internal storage of test results to a host device as required. A built-in API supports integration of the OTDR into third-party fiber test systems.

VeEX says it will display the OPX-BOXe OTDR at ECOC in Gothenburg, Sweden, from September 18-20, and the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Denver from October 17-20, 2017.
