Fiber-optic internet provider i3 Broadband announced it will continue its area-wide, multi-million dollar investment in expanding its fiber-optic network throughout Champaign-Urbana, IL, "starting immediately, weather permitting."

i3 Broadband provides HD TV, voice, and high-speed internet services (including gigabit broadband) via an all fiber-optic network in the greater Peoria, Champaign, and Urbana, IL, markets. The company has partnered with the non-profit UC2B board to extend the fiber backbone buildout UC2B conducted from 2010 through 2013. The original buildout was supported by $26 million in federal and state grants, and in-kind contributions from the cities of Champaign and Urbana, and the University of Illinois.

The company says it will start new construction in several neighborhoods to expand its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network. i3 Broadband adds it will work with UC2B to plan the neighborhood buildouts and decrease disadvantaged community groups' technology adoption barriers by supporting a community benefit fund. The company has also stated that it intends to hire local technicians and other positions later this year to support its growing FTTH network.

"High-speed internet is essential infrastructure for our community," said Diane Marlin, mayor of Urbana. "We are very pleased that i3 Broadband will expand installation of their network in Urbana this week and look forward to the day when all neighborhoods have the connectivity required to support today's business and educational needs."
