Belize Telemedia Ltd. (BTL) and Huawei Marine say they have completed BTL's Strategic Evolution Underwater Link (SEUL) submarine cable project within the two-month installation schedule. The submarine network deployment also came in on budget, the companies add.

The partners announced the project last year (see "Huawei and Belize Telemedia team to deploy Belize to San Pedro Island undersea cable system"). SEUL will offer fiber-optic undersea cable connections from the Belize mainland to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, a distance of approximately 23 km. The submarine cable project is part of BTL's four-year, $100 million effort to modernize the country's mobile and landline infrastructure. BTL will use the SEUL submarine cable to offer its DigiNet Broadband service to the entire island of Ambergris Caye, which includes broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps. The service provider hopes to offer DigiNet Broadband next month to both residents and businesses.

"The SEUL project is an important element of BTL's transformative Network Evolution Plan, and its delivery permits world-class high-speed network connection between Belize and the island of Ambergris Caye, which will significantly enhance the prospects for economic development on the Caye – and eventually throughout the country," stated BTL's CEO Rochus Schreiber. "This milestone would not have been possible without the incredible effort and dedication of both Huawei Marine's professional delivery team and BTL's Network Engineering Team."

BTL is a limited liability company, with 63% of shares held by the Government of Belize. The remaining shares are held by domestic institutional investors and individuals. It offers mobile, landline, and broadband services throughout the country.
